BEXLEY OHIO HISTORY |
|
The City of Bexley, dating back to the mid 1800's, is one of Columbus' oldest and most desirable suburbs. Urbanization began in 1876 when Capital University moved from the Goodale Park area to its present location in Bexley. Professors and their families soon began to move east, build homes, and enroll their children in the Pleasant Ridge School.
Capital University, the oldest university in Ohio, was founded by the Lutheran Church in 1830. Capital has a rich history and offers students five schools of study including College of Arts and Sciences, College of Education, Social Work and Professional Studies, Conservatory of Music, Law School, School of Management, and School of Nursing.
This small community remained relatively unchanged until 1898, with the outbreak of the Spanish-American War the region became a part of military history. The area around Broad and Drexel was chosen by Governor Asa Bushnell as the assembly site for three weeks for the eight thousand Ohio volunteers headed for Cuba.
Improved turn-of-the-century trolley and car travel increased the number of those interested in living east of Alum Creek in what would become the Village of Bexley. In 1908, the area became incorporated and received the name Bexley, which came from the parish housing the Kilbourne family estate in Kent, England. Later that year Bexley became a village through a special election in the summer. Bexley reached the required 5,000 citizens to become a city in 1928, but could not be designated as such until after the 1930 national census. The village adopted a city charter in 1931 and officially became the city of Bexley January 1, 1932. Located in Northern Bexley, the Governor's Mansion has been home to Ohio governors since 1957. |
