Columbus has a vibrant home school community
As more people become disenchanted with the public school system throughout Central Ohio, home schooling has become a very popular and affordable educational alternative, in the Columbus Ohio area. Central Ohio offers a variety of private and charter school choice options. While charter schools are often FREE (because they get some funding from the state and through property taxes that would normally go to your local school district), private schools can be cost prohibitive, especially with the depressed economy.
My son has friends, in the Columbus area, who are home schooled and after talking about their positive experiences with home schooling, we decided to investigate and see if home schooling is right for us. We were very surprised to learn about the abundant Columbus area home school co-ops, classes and activities throughout Central Ohio. I have discovered information from a variety of sources and thought I’d share what I have learned, to make it easier for anyone else considering home schooling, in the Columbus Ohio area.

In each class we work on many areas of music education including rhythm, pitch, excellent singing technique, reading music, and just an overall enjoyment of singing about God and for God. We provide students an intellectual challenge that will prepare them to both proclaim and defend the faith. We exist to help students of homeschooling families acquire knowledge and a love for learning, while also developing critical reasoning and communication skills.
A Partnership with Home Education. Veritas Academy, as a study center, fosters a vital partnership between the academy and the home– where parents and teachers work together to create a climate in which students can grow in knowledge, character, and faith. Veritas Academy was established in 1995 as a private, Christian school committed to providing a classical and Biblically based education to young people in primary and secondary grade levels. Education at Veritas Academy is intended to be inherently different in philosophy and content than that offered in the public schools. Veritas Academy strives to operate as a servant to the family under the assumption that the education of young people is the responsibility of parents and the immediate family rather than the responsibility of the State. Accordingly, we operate primarily as a supplemental educational experience to homeschooled students. Veritas Academy provides a Biblically based curriculum and teaches subjects as parts of an integrated whole with the Scriptures at the center. WEBSITE: http://www.veritasacademy.org/

To discuss current legal, educational, philosophical and practical issues relevant to abortion. Post your ideas and opinions, your sources and resources, news of interest, events and activities, internet links, as well as your support and suggestions for others in this member forum. CENTRAL OHIO CLASSICAL CONVERSATIONS CLASSES
One of the most popular home school coops in Central Ohio, is Classical Conversations. Classical Conversations follows “Classical” Christian homeschooling methods. Classical Conversations has groups meeting in the following Central Ohio communities: Clintonville (Wednesdays), Grove City, Hilliard, Powell (Tuesdays), Reynoldsburg (Thursdays), Westerville (Tuesdays). VISIT: www.ClassicalConversations.com and click on Ohio, on the US Map. Then click on Community Listing Links to find the contact info for the area campuses.
Classical Conversations is a family-oriented service for parents who desire to train all of their children in classical Christian education. Classical Conversations’ purpose is to know God and to make Him known, our mission is to teach the tools of learning, and our goal is to create classical Christian community. The classical model requires children to practice skills that can be hard to practice just within your family. Classical Conversations provides children with the opportunity and motivation to practice in a warm, Christian environment. Classical Conversations is not a private school, but a service that is operated by tutors who have successfully home schooled their own children and want to complement your home school. Several different programs are available through Classical Conversations.
We empower and support parents not only through our Classical Conversations Communities across the country but also through our specially designed CC Connected online community, Parent Practicums, and academic retreats. All of these services ultimately equip parents to educate their children with the classical tools of learning and a biblical worldview so that they might impact the world for God’s glory.
Classical Conversations’ programs model the three stages of classical learning—grammar, dialectic, and rhetoric. Using age appropriate methods, children are taught the tools for studying any subject. The Classical model emphasizes mastery of facts during the early years. This gives students a foundation on which to build later learning and a solid framework where ideas can be categorized and compared as students mature.

Foundations, Essentials |
The morning Foundations Program is for parents and all their children 12 and under. This simple, yet thorough program meets once a week, for 24 weeks during the school year. Trained tutors, who are home school parents in the program, lead each group of students as they participate in art projects, music study, science experiments, oral presentations, and a memorization program in history, geography, Latin, English grammar, math, and science.
Foundations: Our Foundations Programs provide a Classical Christian community for homeschool families with students in grades K4-6th. These power-packed programs typically meet once a week for twelve weeks in the fall and twelve weeks in the winter/spring months.
Based on the classical model of education, families meet weekly to introduce new memory work (or grammar of a subject) and review old memory work using Classical Conversations’ Foundations Guide as the heart of the curriculum. A trained tutor creatively introduces the memory work and leads the classroom time. The memory work is divided into 6 subjects: timeline/history, geography, math, science, Latin, and English grammar. In addition to the memory work, students also participate in a fine arts project/lesson, a science project, and an opportunity to practice oral presentation skills each week.
Each year students have an opportunity to participate in an optional Memory Master track, where a student strives to memorize all the information for that year and recite it to a few adults at the end of the year. Through the Memory Master (MM) track, students are “pounding in” the grammar pegs of history, Latin, English grammar, geography, math, science, and history timeline they learned throughout the year.
Each week students have an opportunity to practice oral presentation skills, ranging from simple show-and-tell for the younger students to more structured and prepared presentations for the older students. The goal of our presentation time is for our students to become comfortable standing, talking, and presenting in front of their peers.
Each week we also have a fine arts time, covering one of the following: basics of drawing, music theory, special art projects, and finally exposure to orchestra and classical composers. Students enjoy this mixture of hands-on activities and listening skills.
Finally, each week students work with the tutor to have a hands-on science activity time. The goals here are for students to become familiar with the scientific method and to begin to discover God through His creation and order in subjects like chemistry, physics, astronomy, physical science, and more. Students and parents rave about the time they spend together each week.
Essentials: Loving learning the essentials of … language, writing, and arithmetic.
This dynamic program provides Classical Christian community for home school families with students in grades 4th-6th. This program, which emphasizes language and writing “grammar” while also incorporating highly-dialectic lessons, is designed to reinforce language arts and structure, writing, and arithmetic mastery.
The Essentials Program meets once-a-week for twelve weeks in the fall and twelve weeks in the winter/spring. Students meet in the afternoons after the Foundations program. A trained tutor helps strengthen the “essential” subjects of language arts and structure, writing, and arithmetic.
The language arts and structure portion employs Classical Conversations own The Essentials of the English Language (EEL) Guide which includes lessons that provide a mixture of grammar and dialectic learning tools used to establish language structure understanding. The unique EEL approach takes students beyond “the worksheet” and the ubiquitous fill-in-the-blank method. Upon a firm foundation of memorized vocabulary, rules, and lists, students build strong language skills through the use of a series of analytical tasks. Students are taught how to thoughtfully analyze sentences and language structure, resulting in stronger language skills, which also strengthens students written and oral works.
The writing portion is based on the method of the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) by Andrew Pudewa utilizing IEW’s signature method of structure and style. This method teaches students how to organize their writing through different writing structures, while also providing stylist techniques that make a student’s writing more engaging. Students often practice writing skills on the same subjects that are being studied in their current Foundations cycle.
The math portion focuses on reinforcing the “essential” elements of arithmetic through challenging math games and problems. This program is designed to complement your home math program by drilling speed and accuracy with basic operations of arithmetic.Challenge: Our Challenge programs provide classical, Christian community for homeschool families with students in 7th-12th grades. The Challenge programs typically meet once a week for fifteen weeks in the fall and fifteen weeks in the winter/spring months.
Based on the classical model of education, students at this age move into the dialectic and rhetoric phases of learning. Students utilize our academically challenging curriculum, which is appropriately named the Challenge Curriculum. This curriculum involves Saxon math, Apologia sciences, classic literature, writing, debate, and much more. Students develop and strengthen the life-long learning skills of grammar, exposition, debate, logic, rhetoric, and research. This curriculum is supplemented by weekly classroom time with a trained Challenge Director/Tutor.
Many parents feel inadequate to homeschool their students through the high school years. Our Challenge programs can help by modeling how to school with confidence during these very important years. Being involved in our Challenge program also helps direct you through your transcript and college preparation needs by keeping you well-informed and providing the tools you need for your record keeping.
The Essentials Program, for 3rd though 6th grade children, meets for 2 hours in the afternoon, and provides a trained tutor that classically teaches the children language arts and leads a Math Slam competition. The writing curriculum used in this program is the Institute for Excellence in Writing.
Challenge Programs for students ages 12 or 7th grade meet in Hilliard and new programs are beginning in Westerville and Clintonville next year. Also, an 8th grade challenge program is launching in Hilliard in the fall of 2011. The Challenge programs offers Latin, logic, rhetoric, science, literature, and math. As students now move into their junior high and high school studies, they are trained to organize facts and to write and speak about all of the subjects in the curriculum. These older students, who are still working under the supervision of their parents, meet one day a week for thirty weeks during the year. The Challenge programs provide a place for the students to make presentations and to participate in discussions from which to examine all worldviews in the light of Scripture. Learn more about “Classical” learning
Based on the philosophy of education used in ancient Greece and in Europe during the Middle Ages, this is a rigorous style of education that views education in three phases. These stages correspond to the development of a child’s ability to reason. Also known as the Trivium. The first stage is when the student learns how to learn and has the ability to memorize many facts. The second stage is when connections are made of the facts already learned. The third phase is when the student is able to use the connections of facts and formulate and articulate his own opinions. Grammar, logic and rhetoric are all important components of the Classical method, as is Latin, usually. The Socratic method and the Great Books of Western tradition are also key parts of this method. Sell Your Gahanna Home and Save With Low Real Estate Commission
Are you planning to sell your home in Gahanna Ohio and looking to save some money? I realize the declining home values in Central Ohio and challenging buyer’s market, is making it difficult for some sellers to afford selling their home. So I’m offering a low, flexible discounted real estate commission to sell your Gahanna home for 1% listing commission, if you buy your next home through me.* If you just need to sell, but don’t plan on buying another home, then I’m offering to sell your home for 2% listing commission.*
SELL FOR LESS - BUY FOR LESS
While home values have declined in Gahanna, home values have remained more stable than other areas, in Central Ohio. Homes that are priced correctly and properly prepared are still selling. If you’re planning to sell your home and move up, you might sell for less, but you might actually save more on the home you buy.

Why Am I Offering Such Low Commission to Sell Your Gahanna Home?
As a local Gahanna REALTOR®, my goal is to sell even more homes and condos in the Gahanna area. While I sell homes all over Columbus Ohio, the closer to home I work = less time I spend traveling = more time I have to sell more homes. I understand the challenging Gahanna real estate market and down economy means less profit for sellers and I’m doing my part to make it more affordable, to sell your home.
Other REALTORS® may offer reduced, flat fee or discounted real estate listing commission to sell your home, but they may not have the experience or track record, to successfully sell your home. In this challenging real estate market you need an experienced REALTOR®, with the ability to provide comprehensive marketing that works. Learn more about my marketing plan to sell your home: Columbuscastles.com/sellers_marketing
Having sold over $50 Million in real estate all over Central Ohio, you can count on my experience to achieve a successful sale of your Gahanna home too.

GREAT TESTIMONY FROM GAHANNA HOME SELLER
I helped Al and Tawny Whicker sell their home at 414 Barwood Drive, Gahanna, Ohio 43230 and buy their 2nd home in Gahanna as well. Following is their testimony.
“In December of 2008, motivated by the low rates and falling house prices, we contacted Petra, Realtor with Remax Connection Realtors in Gahanna Ohio, to ask if selling our home of 10 years to step up to a bigger one was possible. She helped every step of the way. From recommending things we could do to make our home more appealing to buyers, to carefully pricing it and marketing it, she made the process much easier than it could have been.
What really blew us away was Petra’s marketing. She took fantastic pictures of the house, designed a beautiful flyer, created a virtual online tour with narration, and listed us on many web sites. The exposure was tremendous. In fact, as we searched the listings for our next home, it really showed how much better ours was marketed than most.
When it came to buying, Petra patiently listened, worked with our schedule, and took us to any home we wanted to see. She gave great input on pluses and minuses for each, including many things we wouldn’t have thought of, like future resale value.
In less than two months from listing, our home in Gahanna, we got an offer. Petra made sure the contract stipulated an extra week of possession after closing so we could have time to prepare our next home and move. There were no ideal homes on the listings for us that day, but one popped up the next day and we thought it would be perfect. That afternoon Petra met us there, and we were hooked at the front door. By the next day we had our offer accepted and were in contract to both sell the old house and buy our new home in Gahanna.
Petra was helpful and proactive every step of the way. We couldn’t have picked a better realtor, and are immensely thankful for Petra’s work and can-do attitude that made the whole process much easier than we expected. Thanks, Petra! We whole-heartedly recommend you for anyone buying or selling!” Al and Tawny Whicker, proud home owners!”
I pride myself on providing the best guidance to sellers and marketing for my listings. I’d love the opportunity to help with all your Gahanna real estate needs. If you are interested in selling your Gahanna home please CONTACT PETRA at 614-746-2115.
2010 Gahanna Creekside Blues and Jazz Festival Sunday, June 6th, 2010
THE 12th ANNUAL CREEKSIDE BLUES & JAZZ FESTIVAL
BRINGS MUSIC AND MORE TO OLDE GAHANNA, JUNE 18 - 20, 2010
Central Ohio suburbs offer a variety of community festivals for families throughout the summer and one of my favorites is the Creekside Blues and Jazz Festival in Gahanna. My REMAX® Connection Realtors, real estate office is located at 130 Mill Street, in Olde Gahanna, right across from Creekside. So I like to support the local festivals in Gahanna and usually try to attend the Creekside Festival. Since it’s one of my favorites - I thought I’d share the details for the 2010 Gahanna Creekside Blues and Jazz Festival here.
GAHANNA, Ohio - Gahanna continues one of its proudest traditions June 18 - 20, as the Gahanna Convention & Visitors Bureau (GCVB) presents the 12th Annual Creekside Blues & Jazz Festival, bringing together local, regional and national blues and jazz musicians in Olde Gahanna. The three-day festival promises more than 90 hours of live music on four stages, plus plenty of activities, great food and fun for all ages, all set in the picturesque backdrop of Gahanna’s Creekside Park and Plaza.
“The Gahanna CVB and the Festival Planning Committee are putting the finishing touches on what we believe are dynamic, new components for this year’s event,” Laurie Jadwin, Festival chair, said. “The Festival is thrilled that we are able to attract so many talented musicians each year who really want to be part of this event.
“This year we’re partnering with local Gahanna businesses to launch an inaugural pub crawl so that we can feature as many musicians as possible. The crawl will be held the weekend before the festival to help showcase these talented entertainers and their music, as well as the festival, ‘wanna-be musicians’ will have a chance to learn directly from some of the best blues and jazz musicians in central Ohio through new teaching workshops that we’ll be offering. That’s just a sampling. We’re still in the planning phase, so there will be much more to come.”

Singin’ the Blues
On Saturday, June 19, Blues headliner and swamp-blues master Tab Benoit will take the stage to bring his brand of bayou blues to Creekside. He won the Blues Music Association’s Contemporary Male Artist of the Year Award in 2007 and 2008. Benoit performs more than 250 days a year, with a special focus on small towns, as a tribute to his own small-town roots. In addition to his work playing and singing the blues, Benoit is also co-founder of Voice of the Wetlands, an activism organization advocating the preservation of the Gulf Coast.
Additional Blues headliners include:
- The Jimi Vincent Band- For more than 20 years, crowds have been buzzing for this high-energy blues-rock band. The band is a staple at many well-known popular blues festivals, and returns to Gahanna for the second, straight year by popular demand. The band is currently working on material for a new CD and its upcoming festival tour. Band members are Jimi Vincent, Sam Romagnoli, Dustin Smith and Bob Dutton. (Friday)
- The Sonny Moorman Group-This Cincinnati, Ohio-based power trio has continued to collect awards and recognition over the years, including a win at the Columbus Blues Alliance Challenge in 2009 and as a finalist in the 2010 International Blues Challenge. The band’s album Crossroads Motel, with its title track, drew nominations for the 2009 Just Plain Folks Award for Blues Album and Blues Song of the Year. The group features Moorman on guitar and vocals; Marc Hoffman on bass; and Dave Fair on drums and vocals. (Saturday)
- Sean Carney Band-Hailed by Columbus Monthly in 2007 as the city’s best band, the Sean Carney Band has taken blues music around the world, performing at festivals across North America and Europe. In fact, the band will perform in 12 countries in 2010. The band was a winner in the 2007 International Blues Festival. The band self-produced its Live Blues on Whyte CD in 2009, and is working on a new studio recording as well. (Sunday)
And All That Jazz
Critically-acclaimed jazz trombonist and Pickerington, Ohio, native Sarah Morrow will headline the Jazz Stage on Friday, June 18. Morrow holds the distinction of being the first female instrumentalist to become a member of the Ray Charles Orchestra, touring with the music legend in the mid-1990s. She has also toured with other jazz greats including the Duke Ellington Orchestra. In another local connection, Morrow will team up with fellow central Ohio native Bobby Floyd and his trio on stage. Like Morrow, Floyd’s musical prowess has taken him across the United States and around the world. He has shared the stage with the likes of Dionne Warwick and Doc Severinsen, as well as being a featured performer with the Columbus Jazz Orchestra, Columbus Symphony Orchestra and ProMusica Chamber Orchestra.
Additional Jazz headliners include:
- Urban Jazz Coalition-Praised by the Las Vegas City of Light Jazz Festival as the “best-kept secret in smooth jazz,” this Columbus-based septet of musicians has been wowing U.S. audiences for 14 years. UJC has toured with many jazz artists and groups, including Spyro Gyra, The Rippingtons and Al Jarreau. Their last two CDs climbed high on jazz music charts, with Down To Get Up in the #3 spot for 2007 on The JazzWeek Independent Smooth Jazz Chart. (Saturday)
- Columbus Jazz Orchestra (CJO)-For more than three decades, the CJO has been regarded by many as a model musical organizaton, as well as one of the finest jazz orchestras in the world. Hosting nearly 50 subscription concerts each season in Columbus, the CJO teams with internationally-known guest artists to champion the big band jazz format for thousands of fans each year. The CJO is led by former Count Basie Orchestra lead trumpet, Byron Stripling, who has also performed and recorded with the bands of Dizzy Gillespie and Lionel Hampton. In addition, Stripling’s career includes featured solo appearances with the Boston Pops, Pittsburgh Symphony and the National Symphony. (Sunday)
Additional attractions and activities will include:

During the past 12 years, Creekside Blues & Jazz Festival has evolved from a half-day event into a three-day family friendly event, with four stages of entertainment-Creekside Community Stage, Jazz Stage, Blues Stage, and Acoustic Alley, more than 50 musical groups and much more. The festival location spans the area from the eastern banks of Big Walnut Creek with its Creekside Park and Plaza into historic downtown Olde Gahanna. The park and plaza areas feature beautiful views of the creek, boardwalks, a lagoon, two waterfalls, waterside dining, retail shops and more.
