History

Clintonville History

Clintonville’s story begins in the 1800’s with the creation of Franklin County and its Clinton Township. A post office was built on the corner of Oakland Park Avenue and High Street, then known as the Sandusky Turnpike, and it was designated as “Clintonville.” In the early 1900’s, Columbus residents began to build summer homes in the area and with the arrival of the automobile, farms and woodlots were turned into more than 80 subdivisions. In 1905 Indianola Park opened with amusement rides, a swimming pool, dance pavilion, tennis courts, various vaudeville style shows, dancers, singers, circus type acts and more. Indianola Park was a place for entertainment and recreation until the 1930’s. During the 40’s, Clintonville’s population expanded northward towards Morse Road. Today Clintonville encompasses many neighborhoods; including Crestview, Glen Echo Ravine, Walhalla, Dominion Park, Northmoor, Webster Park, Northridge, Overbrook Ravine, Rosemary Park, Indian Springs subdivisions, as well as the Beechwold subdivisions and more than 70 other formally named subdivisions.
