GAHANNA OHIO HISTORY

Olde Gahanna began as a settlement in 1803, soon after the State of Ohio was admitted into the Union. Before that time, the area was covered with dense forest and it’s main inhabitants were Indians. The Indians called what was then known as the Big Walnut Creek River, the Gahanna River. The Gahanna River is the junction of three streams; the Big Walnut Creek, Alum Creek and Blacklick Creek. By 1849, John Clark, son of the original settlers of the property, divided his family’s farm into plots and named the town Gahanna, after the river that ran next to it.

The Gahanna Log House

In the early 1900s Gahanna was a lively mill town and remnants of this can still be seen in Big Walnut Creek along Mill Street. Some original buildings, recognizable by their Victorian architecture, still remain in the Mill and Granville Street area. The Olde Gahanna District was created by City Council in 1976, to preserve the city’s historical origins and local buildings on the National Registry.

GAHANNA RESIDENTS LOOK OUT FOR ONE ANOTHER

Today, The city encourages community involvement and support for their programs and community events. A spirit of volunteerism runs high in Gahanna and this contributes to the pride residents feel about their community. GRIN, a community wide, faith based organization, is committed to helping residents of the Gahanna-Jefferson school district in time of need.  People look out for one another here. With well-managed growth, excellent schools and a convenient location, Gahanna has a bright future.
