POWELL SCHOOLS
Powell residents are served by the Olentangy Local School District, which serves most of Southern Delaware County including Lewis Center. Olentangy Schools consists of 15 elementary, 4 middle and 3 high schools. In response to a population explosion in the school district during the past couple decades, Olentangy has opened many new schools and plans to open several more in the near future to best meet the needs of the communities it serves. Career and Technical education is provided by the Delaware Career Center. While being a rapidly growing district, quality has not been comprimised; on it’s 2008-2009 District Report Card Olentangy Local Schools achieved an ”Excellent with Distinction” rating and met 105.1 out of 120 performance index points.
PARKS & RECREATION
In 2000 Powell began an initiative to offer Parks and Rec programing to best meet the needs of its expanding community. Yearly, more classes and activities have been offered and the program continues to improve their service to the residents of Powell. Several area parks and playgrounds are accessible to the public; a community pool and various other recreational options are also available. The Village has also adopted a walkways and bikeways plan that will link all neighborhoods with the downtown area. Boating, fishing and camping enthusiasts have several options available to them from various nearby rivers, Alum Creek Reservoir located just to the north in Alum Creek State Park.
North Orange Park is a part of Orange Township Parks and Recreation and is located in Lewis Center, just on the edge of Powell. It is in close proximity for Powell residents to enjoy all the amenities this park offers including: an aquatic center, playgrounds, athletic fields, walking trails, basketball courts, in-line skating park, skate park, sports court, neighborhood park, picnic shelters, ice skating and fishing in the pond, ampitheatre, sledding hill, sand volleyball & more.
The Powell YMCA offers many opportunities for activities, classes, swimming lessons, and fitness programs. This is a new, state-of-the-art facility with the latest exercise equipment, indoor and outdoor pools, childcare and an onsite Medical Center.

Community events are plentiful around Powell. The popular Columbus Zoo is located in Powell and hosts many events such as Boo at the Zoo, Kids Zoofari, Wildlights and Eggs, Paws and Claws. Right next to the Columbus Zoo is the outdoor waterpark, Zoombezi Bay.
BUSINESS
Powell prides itself in being a primarily residential community, with very little industrial or commercial presence. Powell Chamber of Commerce promotes the businesses in the area, and sponsors several community events during the year. Powell has a small town business district with quaint shops and a few small restaurants that make for an enjoyable afternoon visit. Although business is not a focus of the town, Powell’s location close to Columbus and other Central Ohio communities makes it a great place to live while pursuing business interests.
POWELL OHIO HISTORY
Powell was founded as the small planned community of Middlebury, Ohio in 1801 by a group of settler’s from Middlebury, Conneticut. It was renamed after Judge Thomas Powell in 1857. Powell was a very small community, of about 400 residents, until the late 20th Century, when it saw a rapid increase in population. The historic town center revitalization is working to create of more attractive and pedestrian centered downtown with a village green to host events and Village Hall. Because of its beautiful environment of rolling hills and scenic countryside, as well as the community’s commitment to retaining it’s small-town appeal, the area continues to thrive as a premier residential community of Central Ohio.
