COMMUNITY EVENTS & ATTRACTIONS
Reynoldsburg was recognized by the Franklin County Historical Society as the "Birthplace of the Tomato" in 1965, because it is here that Alexander Livingston developed the commercial use of the tomato in the late 18th century.  To celebrate Livingston's great feat, Reynoldsburg hosts an annual Tomato Festival at the beginning of September.

REYNOLDSBURG OHIO HISTORY

Mr. Livingston, Reynoldsburg's most renowned resident, has received world wide recognition as a horticulturist in seed experimentation and seed propagation of the tomato. Alexander Livingston was the first person who succeeded in upgrading the wild tomato, developing different breeds and stabilizing the plants. In the 1937 yearbook of the Federal Department of Agriculture, it was declared that "half of the major varieties were a result of the abilities of the Livingstons to evaluate and perpetuate superior material in the tomato." Livingston's first breed of tomato, the Paragon, was introduced in 1870.

He eventually developed over seventeen different varieties of the tomato plant. He also developed sweet corn and cabbage varieties. Many Reynoldsburg families were employed by the Livingston Seed Company, in the fields surrounding his home and in fields of their own where they grew seeds for his company. In 1898, Alexander Livingston died, but not before contributing to Reynoldsburg's history and the history of agriculture in the United States. In 1965, the Franklin County Historical Society recognized Reynoldsburg as "The Home of the Tomato" and annually a festival is held in recognition of Livingston's achievements.
