WHITEHALL SCHOOLS

Whitehall Schools has three elementary schools, one middle and one high school.  In addition, Whitehall has a public early childhood education center, which houses three public preschool classrooms, a public preschool special education program and a Head Start classroom that is operated by Child Development Council of Franklin County. Whitehall received the designation of Continuous Improvemnt on their 2005-2006 district report card, up from Academic Watch the previous school year.

PARKS & RECREATION

Along with Whitehall’s numerous recreational activities, the Greater Columbus Tennis Association hosts a free tennis program for children ages 8-12 with the Whitehall Parks & Rec department. For some excellent golfing check out the prestigious Columbus Country Club.

COMMUNITY EVENTS & ATTRACTIONS

Whitehall celebrates Independence Day with a four day festival. Beginning July 1, there are rides and concessions in John Bishop Park. These continue until July 4, when the celebration culminates with a morning Independence Day Parade, evening live musical entertainment and fireworks display. To kick off the holidays, on December 6 there is a Holiday Lighting Ceremony.

WHITEHALL OHIO HISTORY

In the 19th Century, Robert Brotherton of White Hall, England obtained 156 acres of land between the Alum and Big Walnut Creeks. Ye Olde Whitehall Tavern was established on this property and became a popular stagecoach stop along the National Road. Later, this land was sold to Abram Doney and “Whitehall” was unofficially adopted as its community name. “Old Whitehall” came about in 1910 when Abram’s son sold the estate in one-acre lots. The same year the town was incorporated, 1947, Town & Country, the nation’s first regional shopping center, opened in Whitehall. In the early 1950’s, Whitehall was the nation’s fastest growing city. Population grew from 4,077 in 1950 to 20,818 in 1960.
