WORTHINGTON OHIO HISTORY |
|
Residents are proud of their city's rich heritage and historic downtown. Founded in 1803, the same year Ohio became a state, Worthington began as a small, planned community, of homes, businesses, craftsmen and farms. The founders of the community came from New England and brought ideas of New England architecture and community with them. This heritage is evident in the village green, spacious town lots for homes and early 19th century tavern/boarding houses. In 1812, Worthington lost its bid to become the state capital, but during its early years it became known for its religious activity, educational opportunities and anti-slavery principles.
Worthington's growth after 1850 was limited thus allowing the community to remain a homogeneous village until after World War II, thereby preserving a number of its historic properties. There are 29 buildings, from small shops to large churches, on the National Register of Historic Places, located throughout the Old Worthington area. Many streets are still paved with brick and the luscious green spaces in the downtown area are very inviting. |
