Granville History

Granville was settled in 1805 by New Englanders from Granville, MA and Granby, CT. The village flourished in the early 19th Century due to the Ohio Canal industry. Prosperity brought the construction of many homes designed after Eastern architectural trends. From 1820-35, many buildings were constructed in the Federal style, which consisted of a floor plan that is one room deep by two rooms wide. Many Granville Federal buildings were two rooms down, two up and a kitchen in the back. In the 1830s, Greek revival was introduced. This style was based on Greek temples with, typically, four rooms up and four rooms down. Following the Civil War until the First World War, the Victorian Period brought about great experimentation and change. In 1880, the Ohio Central Railroad came to Granville and 10 years later a street railway connected the village to nearby Newark. Today, Granville maintains its ties to the past, boasting over 100 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places.

Education eventually became the village’s main business, resulting in one of the country’s most outstanding private, liberal arts colleges, Denison University.  Denison University was originally founded in 1831, as the Granville Literary and Theological Institution, the second Baptist college west of the Allegheny mountains. The school survived many changes and was re-named Denison University in 1853. It is Ohio's second-oldest liberal arts college. In the years leading up to the Civil War, Bancroft House was a stop on the Underground Railroad. While Denison was originally a theological institution, it has been a non-sectarian since the 1960s.
