Grove City History

Grove City was founded in 1852 by William F. Breck. He intended to farm the land, but changed plans when he realized the growth potential with the Harrisburg Turnpike passing through to the state capital. He envisioned a new village with a school, church, stores, blacksmith and carpenter.  By 1853, the newly formed village of Grove City had 50 residents. They named the town Grove City for the remaining grove of trees left standing, after their initial clearing. Grove City was incorporated as a city in 1866. By 1870 there were 143 residents and more businesses began to sprout. By 1930, Grove City had grown to a population of 1,550. After World War II, a housing boom began as the area became attractive to those seeking employment at the General Motors and Westinghouse plants, west of Grove City. Others appreciated the convenience of driving only six miles to Downtown Columbus for work. Population began to explode in the 1970's after the completion of Interstate 71 and 270, which has also attracted many businesses. Today Grove City has over 36,000 residents, 1,200 businesses and encompasses 16.73 square miles.
