Granville History

Granville was settled in 1805 by New Englanders from Granville, MA and Granby, CT. The village flourished in the early 19th Century due to the Ohio Canal and the industry and commerce that evolved. With prosperity came the construction of many homes patterned after Eastern architectural trends. From 1820-35, many buildings were constructed in the Federal style, which consisted of a floor plan that is one room deep by two rooms wide. Many Granville Federal buildings were two rooms down, two up and a kitchen in the back. In the 1830s, Greek revival was introduced. This style was based on Greek temples with, typically, four rooms up and four rooms down. Following the Civil War until the First World War, the Victorian Period brought about great experimentation and change.

Education eventually became the village’s main business, resulting in one of the country’s most outstanding private, liberal arts college, Denison University. In 1880, the Ohio Central Railroad came to Granville and 10 years later an interurban street railway connected the village to nearby Newark. Today, Granville is experiencing a major building boom, but maintains its ties to the past. Granville boasts over 100 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places.
